The New York Knicks made their final roster decision over the weekend, but Tyler Kolek‘s future was apparently never as uncertain as recent trade speculation suggested.

According to NBA insider Marc Stein of The Stein Line, the Knicks did not shop Kolek in an attempt to create enough roster flexibility to keep veteran Bruce Brown.

Citing a source briefed on the discussions, Stein reported that New York would have considered trading the young point guard before Tuesday’s season opener against the Philadelphia 76ers only if the deal returned a center the organization particularly wanted.

That distinction is significant for Kolek, whose name had surfaced in trade speculation as the defending champions weighed how to finalize their roster without crossing the NBA’s second salary-cap apron.

Instead of moving Kolek, the Knicks released Brown on Saturday and retained former No. 2 overall pick James Wiseman, opting to begin the season with 14 players.

Tyler Kolek Trade Interest Comes With Major Condition

The Knicks spent the final weeks of training camp evaluating ways to preserve their backcourt depth while strengthening the frontcourt.

Kolek, a 2024 second-round pick, emerged as a potential trade candidate because of New York’s crowded guard rotation and limited financial flexibility.

But Stein’s latest reporting suggests the Knicks were unwilling to move him simply to solve a roster-number problem.

The team would have needed a more compelling return.

Specifically, a center capable of addressing one of its most pressing needs.

New York has been searching for frontcourt depth since Mitchell Robinson’s departure, leaving Karl-Anthony Towns and Andre Drummond as its primary established options.

The Knicks were particularly interested in younger, athletic big men who could offer rim protection and vertical spacing.

That search ultimately led them to Wiseman.

The 25-year-old former Golden State Warriors center impressed during the preseason, highlighted by an 18-point, 10-rebound performance against Toronto.

His athleticism and potential evidently outweighed Brown’s experience when New York settled on its opening-night roster.

James Wiseman Takes Final Roster Spot Over Bruce Brown

Knicks coach Mike Brown offered further insight Sunday into the organization’s decision to retain Wiseman.

“When you have a guy that’s 25 years old, that has the length and the athleticism and the talent [of] a James Wiseman,” Brown told reporters.

The coach specifically praised Wiseman’s ability to run the floor and finish above the rim, qualities he believes provide a different dimension alongside Towns and Drummond.

Brown’s familiarity with Wiseman dates to their time together in Golden State.

The decision also reflects the financial constraints facing New York.

Owner James Dolan has made clear that he intends to keep the team’s payroll below the second apron, even after its historic championship run.

Keeping 14 players allows the Knicks to preserve additional flexibility without immediately triggering the restrictions associated with carrying a more expensive roster.

Wiseman had emerged as the favorite for the final opening-night spot before Saturday’s decision.

For Kolek, Stein’s report provides an important clarification.

The Knicks were apparently willing to entertain the right trade, but they weren’t actively trying to sacrifice the young guard merely to accommodate Brown.

With their roster settled, Kolek now has another opportunity to establish himself behind Jalen Brunson as New York begins its championship defense.
