The Indianapolis Colts are undergoing major changes after a disappointing start to the 2026 season, and one rookie is now tasked with filling enormous shoes.
After Indianapolis traded eight-time Pro Bowl guard Quenton Nelson to the Seattle Seahawks on Tuesday, October 27, rookie Jalen Farmer is expected to step in at left guard.
Head coach Shane Steichen addressed the situation during his Wednesday press conference, expressing confidence in Farmer as the Colts prepare to face the Jacksonville Jaguars on November 1.
The move comes amid major changes throughout the Colts organization, including the firing of general manager Chris Ballard and the trades of Nelson and defensive tackle DeForest Buckner.
With Indianapolis sitting at 2-5 and the November 10 trade deadline approaching, the franchise appears to be turning its attention toward the future.
Life goes on in Indianapolis, and they have a game to play this Sunday. Farmer and other young players will have to step into larger roles and will be expected to play well.
Shane Steichen Expresses Confidence in Jalen Farmer After Quenton Nelson Trade
Steichen made it clear Wednesday that he believes Farmer is ready for the opportunity ahead.
Speaking to reporters following the departures of Nelson and Buckner, Steichen praised the two veterans for their contributions to Indianapolis while emphasizing the opportunities their exits create for younger players.
“Farmer’s got an opportunity to step up,” Steichen said during his October 28 press conference.
The Colts coach also praised Farmer’s preparation under offensive line coach Tony Sparano Jr., saying the rookie has been working extremely hard and is excited for his opportunity.
Farmer will face a difficult challenge replacing Nelson, who earned Pro Bowl honors in each of his first eight NFL seasons and three first-team All-Pro selections.
The former Notre Dame star was one of the most accomplished offensive linemen in Colts history before being dealt to Seattle in exchange for a 2027 third-round pick and a 2028 fifth-round selection.
Steichen revealed that Nelson told him he planned to stay in contact with the rookie and make sure he continued handling his responsibilities.
Farmer has also acknowledged the magnitude of the opportunity, recognizing Nelson as a future Hall of Famer while stressing that his priority is helping his teammates.
Who Is Jalen Farmer?
Farmer is a rookie who was selected in the fourth round of the 2026 NFL Draft after spending two seasons at Kentucky.
He started 24 games at right guard during his college career with the Wildcats.
He also impressed scouts at the NFL Combine, recording a 4.93-second 40-yard dash, the fourth-fastest time by a guard since at least 1999.
Farmer has limited experience at left guard, having spent nearly his entire college career on the opposite side of the line.
However, the Colts have expressed confidence in his physical abilities since drafting him. Sparano was particularly enthusiastic about Farmer during the pre-draft process, praising his strength, athleticism, and potential.
Colts Face Uncertain Future After Chris Ballard Firing & Major Trades
Farmer’s opportunity comes at a turbulent moment for Indianapolis.
The Colts dismissed longtime general manager Chris Ballard on October 19 following a 2-4 start, leaving Steichen to navigate the remainder of the season amid growing organizational uncertainty.
With Ballard gone, head coach Shane Steichen likely needs to win games to avoid following Ballard out the door.
The Colts will need players like Farmer to step up and get up to speed quickly.
Steichen understands that the remaining players have a job to do.
“Everyone’s got a job to do,” the coach said while discussing the trades, acknowledging that difficult personnel decisions are part of the NFL.
At the very least, the Colts will get a look at some young players over the course of what could be a long season if things don’t improve soon.
They will face the Jacksonville Jaguars this Sunday in an AFC South clash.
