Tyreek Hill has built a reputation as one of the NFL’s most explosive wide receivers, but his career has also drawn multiple legal controversies and misconduct allegations.
The former Kansas City Chiefs and Miami Dolphins star is facing renewed scrutiny after a jury found him liable for two counts of battery in a civil lawsuit brought by his estranged wife, Lakeeta Vaccaro.
The jury awarded Vaccaro $500,000 in compensatory damages but found Hill not liable on eight other claims. Jurors also rejected her punitive damages claim.
The verdict has raised additional questions about Hill’s NFL future as the free agent looks to return to the field following a serious knee injury suffered in September 2025.
The NFL told Pro Football Talk it continues to review the matter under its personal conduct policy.
“We have been monitoring developments in the matter which remains under review of the personal conduct policy,” the league said in a statement.
The latest case adds to a history of legal issues and allegations dating back to Hill’s college football career.
Tyreek Hill’s Legal Troubles Began Before His NFL Career
Hill’s first major legal controversy came in December 2014 while he played football at Oklahoma State.
His then-girlfriend, Crystal Espinal, who was pregnant at the time, accused Hill of choking her and punching her in the face and stomach during an argument.
Police arrested Hill, and Oklahoma State dismissed him from its football and track programs.
“Oklahoma State University does not tolerate domestic abuse or violence,” the school said in a statement.
Hill initially pleaded not guilty before entering a guilty plea in August 2015. According to The Oklahoman, he received three years of probation and was required to complete anger management classes and a 52-week Batterer’s Intervention Program.
Despite the incident, the Chiefs selected Hill in the fifth round of the 2016 NFL Draft.
Hill addressed the controversy during his first rookie minicamp in Kansas City.
“The fans have every right to be mad at me,” Hill said, according to Sporting News. “I did something wrong. I let my emotions get the best of me, and I shouldn’t have did it. They have every right to be mad.”
He added, “But guess what? I’m fixing to come back, be a better man, be a better citizen, and everything takes care of itself, and let God do the rest.”
Hill Faced Child Abuse Allegations During His Time With the Chiefs
In 2019, Hill became the subject of another investigation after his then-3-year-old son suffered a broken arm.
Sports Illustrated reported that authorities were investigating allegations involving Hill and Espinal.
Prosecutors ultimately declined to file charges against either parent, saying investigators could not determine who was responsible for the child’s injuries.
The Chiefs temporarily suspended Hill from team activities after a recording surfaced of a conversation between him and Espinal concerning the allegations.
The NFL conducted its own investigation and announced in July 2019 that Hill would not face league discipline.
“Based on the evidence presently available, the NFL cannot conclude that Mr. Hill violated the Personal Conduct Policy,” the league said at the time.
Hill returned to the Chiefs and helped the franchise win Super Bowl LIV following the 2019 season.
Tyreek Hill Faced Additional Allegations After Joining the Dolphins
Hill’s off-field controversies continued after Kansas City traded him to Miami in 2022.
In June 2023, police investigated an alleged altercation at Haulover Marina in Miami Beach after an employee accused Hill of striking him during a disagreement.
Authorities declined to pursue charges, and Hill later reached an undisclosed settlement with the employee. The NFL also declined to take disciplinary action.
Another lawsuit emerged in February 2024 when Instagram model Sophie Hall accused Hill of breaking her leg during football drills at his Florida home.
Hall alleged that Hill became angry after she performed well during the drills and forcefully shoved her, causing a serious leg injury.
The lawsuit claimed Hall required surgery and continued physical therapy. Those allegations were made in a civil complaint and were not established findings of fact in the information provided.
Hill also made headlines in September 2024 when Miami-Dade police detained him during a traffic stop outside Hard Rock Stadium before the Dolphins’ season opener.
Video showed officers placing Hill in handcuffs and forcing him to the ground.
The incident prompted scrutiny of the officers’ actions, and the Miami-Dade Police Department placed one officer on administrative leave.
After the game, Hill questioned how police might have treated someone who wasn’t a professional athlete.
“What if I wasn’t Tyreek Hill?” he asked.
Hill’s Estranged Wife Detailed Domestic Violence Allegations in Court
Hill’s latest legal problems stem from allegations Vaccaro made during the couple’s divorce proceedings.
In September 2025, ESPN reported that the NFL was investigating domestic violence accusations involving the wide receiver.
According to TMZ, Vaccaro described eight alleged incidents, including claims that Hill shoved her to the floor, pulled off her necklace, and physically assaulted her during arguments.
The Athletic later reported on court documents that included additional allegations of physical abuse.
Vaccaro testified during the October 2026 civil trial in Miami, describing alleged incidents during their marriage, including disputes in January 2024 and while she was pregnant later that year.
The jury ultimately found Hill liable for two battery claims while rejecting the remaining eight claims.
The civil verdict is not a criminal conviction.
Tyreek Hill’s NFL Future Remains Uncertain After $500K Verdict
Despite the latest legal developments, Hill’s agent, Drew Rosenhaus, believes the receiver could sign with an NFL team during the season.
Rosenhaus recently explained what Hill wants from his next opportunity.
“Well, you know, when you sign with a team midseason, you’d like to go to a winner,” Rosenhaus said. “Number two, as a wide receiver, you’d like to go to a team that needs a wide receiver. Number three, you’d like to go to a team that’s got a pretty good quarterback. And number four, Tyreek’s gonna bring a lot of impact. We’ve got to get a fair contract. And that’s always complex to negotiate in the middle of a season.”
Rosenhaus acknowledged that Hill hasn’t fully recovered from the knee injury he suffered against the New York Jets in September 2025, but said he is getting close.
Hill’s accomplishments include eight Pro Bowl selections, five first-team All-Pro honors and a Super Bowl championship. He also led the NFL with 1,799 receiving yards and 13 receiving touchdowns in 2023.
However, the NFL’s ongoing review adds another consideration for teams interested in signing the veteran receiver.
The league has not announced whether Hill will face disciplinary action following the latest civil verdict.
