Big Dom Saves Eagles Head Coach in Tense Halftime Moment

If we know anything about Philadelphia Eagles head coach Nick Sirianni at this point … it’s that he’s an incredible football coach.

After that, the thing we know for sure is that he’s got one heck of a temper.

Sirianni’s famous, fiery approach was on display at halftime of the Eagles‘ Super Bowl rematch with the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium in Week 2, when Fox Sports aired a video of Sirianni having to be separated from a group of game officials by Eagles Chief Security Officer “Big Dom” DiSandro.

Sirianni appeared to be upset over a false start call on Eagles long snapper Charley Hughlett was called for a 5-yard false start penalty before a field goal attempt by Jake Elliott.

Elliott still hit a 58-yard field goal to tie the score 10-10 as time expired in the second quarter.

“Jake Elliott hits a 58-yarder with plenty of distance to spare after a five-yard penalty on Charley Hughlett pushed them back,” Eagles reporter E.J. Smith wrote on his official X account on September 14. “It’s 10-10 at halftime. Interesting that Nick Sirianni elected to run the clock down for the FG there with two timeouts and 30 or so seconds left.”

One Of NFL’s Greatest Young Head Coaches

Following the Eagles’ 40-22 win over the Chiefs in Super Bowl LIX on February 9, Sirianni became just the third head coach in NFL history with a .700 winning percentage and a Super Bowl victory.

The other two on the list are 2 of the greatest head coaches in the history of professional sports in Vince Lombardi — the namesake for the Super Bowl trophy — and John Madden.

That it came 2 years after the Eagles lost to the same team in Super Bowl LVII only made it that much sweeter for Sirianni, who was hired by the Eagles before the 2021 season.

It also came one season after the Eagles had one of the more epic regular season meltdowns in recent memory in 2023 after they started the season 10-1, lost 6 of their last 7 games and were beaten by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Wild Card Round.

Sirianni Had Rough Start To 2024 Season

While Sirianni ended 2024 on a career high note, it represented a massive turnaround from how the season started.

You couldn’t have found another head coach in the NFL more in the crosshairs of his fan base and the national media more than Sirianni through the first half of the season.

Sirianni blew it for the Eagles in a Week 2 loss to the Atlanta Falcons by throwing the ball late and with a lead, setting up the Falcons for a game-winning drive. Then, after a win over the Cleveland Browns in Week 6, Sirianni found himself in hot water again when he decided it was a good idea to scream at Eagles’ fans sitting behind his own bench after the game.

Sirianni ended up having to apologize for feuding with his own fans — an edict that came down from team owner Jeffrey Lurie.

“What I was really doing was trying to bring energy, enthusiasm. And I’m sorry and disappointed about how my energy was directed at the end of the game,” Sirianni said. “My energy should be all in on coaching, motivating, and celebrating with our guys.”
