A special Pokemon Day event for Pokemon Go has just been announced.

As was detailed today on the official Pokemon website, for a week-long period, every Pikachu that players encounter in Pokemon Go will be wearing a party hat. This event begins on Sunday, February 26th at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time, and it concludes on Monday, March 6th at 1:00 p.m. Pacific Time.

After you catch a party hat Pikachu, the creature will retain its hat in your inventory forever. This is similar to an event Niantic held around Christmas, when Pikachus encountered in the wild would be wearing a Santa hat.

Pokemon Day itself is February 27th, and this commemorates the launch of the first Pokemon game, Pocket Monsters Aka and Midori, in Japan in February 1996. Niantic has held several holiday events in Pokemon Go over the past few months, including on Halloween, Christmas and New Year’s.

This all comes just a few days after the second generation of Pokemon launched in Pokemon Go, reigniting interest in the mobile app and bringing back some gamers who hadn’t played in some time. Over 80 new Pokemon are now available in the wild.
