Tyler Gilbert: Breaking News

The White Sox placed Gilbert on the 15-day injured list Wednesday with a left shoulder impingement. Gilbert retired one of three batters he faced in Tuesday's extra-innings win over Atlanta and finds himself on the IL a day later. Chris Murphy will take over Gilbert's vacated roster spot.

Gilbert will serve as the White Sox's opening pitcher for Sunday's game in Philadelphia, Brooke Fletcher of Chicago Sports Network reports. In an effort to counter a Philadelphia offense that often features three lefty hitters (Kyle Schwarber, Bryce Harper and Brandon Marsh) in the top half of the lineup, the White Sox will go with a left-handed opener for the second straight day. Gilbert is likely to work the first inning or two before giving way to right-hander David Sandlin, who is set to work in bulk relief after starting in his first two MLB appearances.

The White Sox reinstated Gilbert from the family medical emergency list Thursday. Gilbert will rejoin the active roster after spending a few days away from the team to tend to a family emergency. He's given up four runs over 2.2 innings in the majors this season but owns a 2.12 ERA and 0.65 WHIP at Triple-A Charlotte since being sent down to the minors in mid-April. Chris Murphy was optioned to Charlotte in a corresponding move.
