Katie Rich, a writer for Saturday Night Live (SNL) since 2013, is facing extreme public criticism and a call for her job to be terminated after posting an offensive tweet about 10-year-old Barron Trump.
“Barron will be the country’s first homeschool shooter,” she tweeted the afternoon of January 20, just hours after Barron’s father Donald Trump was named the 45th President of the United States. Rich later deleted the tweet, and her Twitter account is now private. Additionally, a biography page for the writer said it was “down for maintenance” at the time of publishing.
Deadline.com reported on January 23 that a “source close to the situation” confirmed Rich has indeed been suspended. On Saturday’s episode of SNL, her name did not appear in the show’s credits.
Rich tweeted the following apology Monday afternoon:
A Change.org account was set up to try and get Rich fired, and there were nearly 40,000 signatures as of Monday evening. The petition reads, in part:
Online bullying of children (including and especially those in our White House!) by any adult is unacceptable behavior and should not be tolerated under any circumstances. If Ms. Rich does not get fired, heftily fined AND issue a written apology to our First Family immediately, NBC should be banned from our White House press room and shunned by our new administration, and SNL should be boycotted into oblivion.
Numerous people are standing up for the young boy, and taking their outrage to social media.
Kelsey Newman posted to Facebook:
Seriously. You people are ruthless. Starting fires. Assaulting innocent people. Rioting in the streets. Damaging and destroying business and other people’s property. Promoting violence and hate like I have never seen before. Whatever. Do what makes you feel good.
But to go after an innocent 10 year old boy? Really? THAT is what is going to heal your broken heart???? Well guess what. HIS dad is still YOUR president. And no matter what, he is and always will be more wealthy and more successful than you and your apparently perfect children will ever be.
Twitter users are calling for the writer to be fired and more:
Should Price be fired? Take the poll:
“How can some people be SO cruel? I have seen mean tweets about Barron Trump..he is a KID! I block all those who are so cruel,” Greta Van Susteren tweeted:
In addition, some plan to boycott Saturday Night Live:
