Bills vs Washington Preview

This game features a few old friends trying to out-maneuver each other. Bills head coach Sean McDermott was Washington head coach Ron Rivera’s defensive coordinator for six seasons with the Carolina Panthers, and now, they’ll be squaring off as opponents.

“When you talk about teams that have opportunities every year now to compete and do some things, this is one of them,” Rivera said about the Bills this week. “We feel like we’re coming up against a measuring stick and really kind of see where we are, and how far we have to go.”

WFT is coming off a nail-biting 30-29 win over the New York Giants on September 16. Washington QB Taylor Heinicke balled out, completing 34 of 46 passes for 336 yards, two touchdowns and an interception in a winning effort. Washington managed just 87 yards rushing against the Giants defense, but Heinicke and company converted two key fourth downs, and a last-second field goal by kicker Dustin Hopkins sealed the deal.

On the other side, the Bills are coming off a dominant 35-0 win over the Miami Dolphins, which was much needed after their Week 1 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers. Bills quarterback Josh Allen went 17-33 for 179 yards, two touchdowns and an interception against Miami, but despite putting up solid numbers, the young QB is holding himself to a very high standard.

“It’s no secret that I didn’t play great last game and I didn’t play great the week before,” Allen said, per Matt Parrino of NewYorkUpstate.com.

“Stuff I’m working on and just got to push through it and find ways to be better for this team…I demand so much of myself and I want to execute at such a high level. When things aren’t going well I get so frustrated with myself. So I got to find a way to keep going, be light for the guys and be the best leader that I can be for this team.”

On defense, the Bills are giving up just 11.5 points a game, which is second in the NFL. Buffalo is also second in the league in total defense, surrendering 234 yards per contest, so Heinicke is going to be challenged. It will be interesting to see how he responds.
