Ke'Bryan Hayes: Breaking News

The Reds placed Hayes on the 10-day injured list Friday with a lumbar bulging disc. Per C. Trent Rosecrans of The Athletic, Hayes' back has been an issue for years and has bothered him off-and-on this season. The plan is for Hayes to get healed up before reporting to the team's spring training complex in Arizona to initiate his rehab. It sounds like an injury that is likely to keep him out beyond 10 days, and the Reds could want Hayes to find a groove at the plate on a rehab assignment before reinstating him. The 29-year-old is slashing an ugly .142/.195/.225this season.

Hayes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Phillies. Hayes appears to have faded into more of a part-time role for the Reds, as he'll be on the bench for the third time in eight games. Sal Stewart will receive the nod at third base in place of Hayes, who is holding down a career-worst .420 OPS over 128 plate appearances on the season.

Hayes is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Nationals. Hayes is under contract through 2029, but the Reds may already be looking to pull the plug on him as an everyday player. He'll be on the bench against a right-handed starter (Jake Irvin) for the third time in seven games, clearing the way for Will Benson to enter the lineup. Hayes remains a reliable defender at the hot corner, but his .191 wOBA places him last among the 239 hitters who have logged at least 100 plate appearances this season.
