Officer Rafael Ramos was shot and killed in his patrol car by madman attacker Ismaaiyl Brinsley on December 20 in Brooklyn, New York. Ramos, 40, was with the force for just two years when he died. He had just turned 40 on December 12.
Here’s what you need to know:
1. His Son Sent Out a Heartbreaking Facebook Message
New York Mayor Bill de Blasio told the media that Officer Ramos had a 13-year-old son and the mayor had met the boy. The mayor said Ramos’ son “couldn’t comprehend what had happened to his father.” Later, Ramos’ son, Jaden, sent out a heartbreaking Facebook post where he wrote, “Today I had to say bye to my father. He was their for me everyday of my life, he was the best father I could ask for.” Five minutes earlier, he wrote, “Today is the worst day of my life.”
2. Ramos ‘Loved’ His Precinct
CBS New York reports that officer Ramos “loved” being stationed at the 84th precinct in downtown Brooklyn. He had previously been a school safety officer in the NYPD. He would have been on the force for three years in January. According to his Facebook page, Ramos was a native of Brooklyn.
3. Ramos & Liu Never Saw Their Attacker Coming
Commissioner Bill Bratton told the media on December 20 that Ramos and his partner, officer Wenjian Liu, probably never saw their attacker as they were shot “execution style.” One witness had told the New York Daily News that the two cops didn’t stand a chance against Brinsley’s ambush. Ramos had been sitting in the car’s drivers seat and Liu was in the front passenger’s seat.
Both cops were rushed to Woodhull Medical Center in critical condition after the shooting. Sadly, the two officers were pronounced dead just after 5 p.m. on December 20. The New York Post reports that detectives believe that the gunman thought of the shooting as a revenge mission for Eric Garner and Michael Brown. Both officers had been working overtime on an anti-terrorism drill when the shooting happened.
4.His Funeral Will Be Held on December 22
Officer Ramos will be laid to rest on December 27 at 10 a.m. at 64-34 Myrtle Avenue, Glendale, New York. There will be a public mourning held on December 26 between 2 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the same church. Ramos was religious, on his Facebook page, he uses the quote, “If your way isn’t working, try God’s way,” as his cover image. He also studied at the Faith Evangelical Seminary.
5. This Is the Second Major Attack Against NYPD Officers in 2 Months
This shooting comes two months after axe-wielding maniac, Zale Thompson, attacked a group of NYPD officers. He wounded two but was shot dead by the other cops who were present. Thompson’s Facebook page showed multiple references to Black Power. Prior to the attack, he had been discharged from the Navy.
