United Airlines Flights Grounded: 5 Fast Facts You Need to Know

All United Airlines flights were grounded after a computer glitch caused long lines and chaos inside America’s airports on July 8. The problem will affect flights throughout the country for the entire day. Just after 10 a.m., United’s planes were ungrounded but residual delays continued to cause problems.

1. United Airlines Have Told the FAA That Their Planes Aren’t Moving

The order to ground the flights came in at 7:49 a.m. on July 8 when United told the FAA that there would be no movement from their planes, according to Air Live. Passengers arriving at airports early on the morning of July 8 without hard copies of their check-in details were unable to check-in, reports NBC News. The network said that the problem is likely to affect flights all day.


2. The Airline Just Offered 1 Million Frequent Flier Miles to Anyone Who Can Hack Their Website

This outage comes a month after United offered 1 million frequent flier miles to anybody who could hack their website. The competition made it clear that hackers were not to affect flights. The project is known as a “Bug Bounty.” The company threatened legal action against anyone who threatens flights, like Chris Roberts did to the airline in April 2015.

4. United Released a Very Short Statement

On United’s Twitter page the company says “We experienced a network connectivity issue. We are working to resolve and apologize for any inconvenience.” The Federal Aviation Administration aren’t saying much either, blaming the problem on “automation issues,” reports NBC News. According to the airline, a waiver is available to change flights at United.com.


5. The Day Before, an RnB Singer Claimed a United Flight Attendant Called Someone a ‘Ni**er’

This is more unwanted bad publicity for United after singer Kehlani claimed on Twitter that she was racially abused by a flight attendant on July 7. She wrote “F**K UNITED AIRLINES YOURE RACIST, YOU CONDONE DISRESPECTFUL FLIGHT ATTENDANTS AND RACIAL SLUTS. F**K YOU @United.” The singer said that one attendant called one of her dancers a “Ni**ger” before her entourage were ordered off the plane.
