Chris Murphy, a Democratic Senator from Connecticut, is filibustering on the Senate floor to discuss gun control in the wake of the horrific mass shooting in Orlando. The filibuster is in the hopes of getting bipartisan support for laws that can involve, among other things, barring suspected terrorists from successfully purchasing firearms.
Fellow Democratic Connecticut Senator Richard Blumenthal, as well as Democratic New Jersey Senator Cory Booker, quickly backed the filibuster. Murphy is a long-time gun control advocate, having seen Connecticut endure the tragedy at Sandy Hook.
The Senate had originally congregated for a spending bill, which some were hoping to give gun amendments. But Politico quotes Murphy as saying the Senate should “not proceed with debate on amendments to this bill until we have figured out a way to come together on, at the very least, two simple ideas.”
Murphy, according to Politico, Murphy is hoping that “we can get a path forward on addressing this epidemic in a meaningful, bipartisan way” regarding mass shootings and gun regulations.
