Coach Shane Steichen noted Monday that Gay is dealing with an injury (groin/hamstring) ahead of Sunday's season opener against the Texans, James Boyd of The Athletic report and Stephen Holder of ESPN.com report. With Gay's Week 1 status to be determined due to his injury concern, the Colts have Spencer Shrader on their practice squad as a potential fill in against Houston. Added context regarding the situation will arrive no later than Wednesday, when the team's first injury report is posted.
McGrone (undisclosed) was placed on injured reserve by the Colts on Tuesday. McGrone recorded four total tackles (three solo) with the Colts in the preseason, picking up an undisclosed injury at some point along the way. He'll now be sidelined for at least the four games of the season before being eligible to return in Week 5 versus the Jaguars on Oct. 6.
Downs (ankle) isn't practicing Wednesday, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports. Downs hasn't practiced since suffering a high-ankle sprain Aug. 7, which was 32 days before the Colts' Sept. 8 season opener against Houston. Head coach Shane Steichen said Sunday that he's hopeful Downs will be available for the season opener, but the wideout's continued absences from practice suggest he's in danger of sitting out. Alec Pierce and Adonai Mitchell both had full-time roles on the first-team offense this preseason alongside No. 1 receiver Michael Pittman.
Sermon (hamstring) returned to practice Wednesday, Nate Atkins of The Indianapolis Star reports. Sermon injured his hamstring Aug. 11 during the Colts' preseason opener, after reports from the first two weeks of training camp suggested he was the favorite for the No. 2 RB role. He's now one of three backs on the roster after Tuesday's cutdowns, joined by starter Jonathan Taylor and 23-year-old Tyler Goodson. As things currently stand, Sermon presumably would get most of the carries in the event of a Taylor injury, with Goodson then handling passing situations and more of the targets.
Laulu was waived by the Colts. It's a mild surprise that the Colts didn't keep their 2024 seventh-round draft pick on the roster. He's a candidate to be developed on the practice squad.
Leo was waived by the Colts. Leo was selected by the Colts in the sixth round of the 2023 NFL Draft, but missed the 2023 season due to a knee injury. He hurt the same knee in the preseason but was able to return to practice. He may need to prove he's fully healthy before getting another chance with a team.
Simpson was waived by the Colts. It's a bit surprising that the Colts would give up so quickly on a 2024 fifth-round draft pick, but the team was confident in the returning secondary with JuJu Brents and Dallis Flowers both healthy. He's a candidate to sign with the practice squad.
