The second generation of Pokemon may be coming to Pokemon Go next month, a series of new rumors suggest.
These rumors began when a Reddit user who claimed to work for Starbucks posted what he said was an internal memo referencing the release of Pokemon Go version two on December 7th. This user subsequently deleted his post and his entire account, but that didn’t stop the supposed leak from sparking a whole lot of excitement.
There were a few problems with this post, one critical one being that the memo misspells “Pokemon” as “Pokeman.” There’s also no proof at all that the memo came from Starbucks; if the user had just typed it out on Microsoft Word, printed it, and took a photo of the page, the post would look exactly the same. Moderators of the Pokemon Go subreddit, however, did say that the user shared more information with them that suggested he does work for Starbucks and that the memo is legitimate.
Even if the memo is from Starbucks, though, it doesn’t even necessarily suggest a generation two update is coming. After all, it just refers to “version two,” not “generation two,” so it’s possible that they’re talking about some other major update or perhaps a tie-in with Starbucks Poke Stops coming in time for the holiday season.
Here’s what the Reddit user posted to accompany the alleged memo, via BGR.
“I work at Starbucks and this is one of the most recent updates we received from corporate. Now, it’s hard to say whether or not this specifically refers to Generation 2 (although what else could it mean?), whether or not Starbucks and Niantic are partnered up, or if this will even be pushed out on the date specified (things don’t always go to plan). However, it all makes sense to me, but this would be a huge update. Based on the description of the event, it would require Niantic to put a Pokestop at every Starbucks. Lastly, I realize this may seem strange, especially with the “Pokeman”, but it’s a real email and I can send proof to the mods if required. Regardless, this isn’t anything concrete and pretty vague, and no other information was given to us. As a huge fan of Pokemon and Pokemon Go, I couldn’t NOT share the news with everyone. Fingers crossed that it’s gonna happen!”
December 7th is rapidly approaching, and there has been no other confirmation of this since the Reddit post. With just over a week to go, one would think Niantic would put out some sort of an official announcement if such a major change to the game was about to launch.
The second, more recent rumor comes from Venture Beat, which is reporting that the generation two update will likely come next month. They base this on an analysis of the mobile game’s code, and although this is the extent of their report, information in the game’s code has in the past revealed major updates that are on the way. For example, that’s how players discovered the implementation of the “buddy” system; they analyzed language in the code and figured out Niantic would soon let users walk Pokemon for candy, something they subsequently made official.
For now, all we have are rumors and speculation, though, so players probably should not get their hopes up about playing with 100 new Pokemon in time for this holiday season. After all, this would be the most massive update ever released for Pokemon Go, and Niantic has been notoriously sluggish about implementing new features, taking several months just to roll out an updated tracking system. And although the game’s creator, John Hanke, has always promised that generation two Pokemon are coming, he never suggested that this would happen before the end of 2016.
“Beyond first generation, there are some others that may make their way into our universe,” Hanke said back in July. “We’re looking forward to finding interesting ways to make that happen in the coming months and years.”
