Abraham Toro: Everything you need to know

The Royals signed Toro to a minor-league contract Friday that includes an invitation to spring training, Daniel Alvarez-Montes of ElExtraBase.com reports. Toro got into 77 games with the Red Sox this past season, slashing .239/.289/.371 with seven long balls. The 29-year-old can handle first base, second base and third base, and that versatility gives him a shot to land an Opening Day roster spot in a reserve role.

Toro cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Worcester on Sunday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. The 28-year-old was designated for assignment by Boston on Thursday but will remain in the organization after passing through waivers unclaimed. Toro played in 77 games for the Red Sox this season and had a .239/.289/.371 slash line with seven home runs, 27 RBI and 33 runs.

The Red Sox designated Toro for assignment Thursday. Toro collected just a .524 OPS in his last 49 games and had become a roster redundancy after Nathaniel Lowe signed with Boston over the weekend. If Toro passes through waivers, he will have the ability to decline a potential outright assignment and become a free agent.
