Patrick Higgins: Breaking News

The Reds optioned Higgins to Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. With backup catcher Jose Trevino (hamstring) returning from the injured list, Higgins was no longer needed as a depth option behind top backstop Tyler Stephenson. Following his May 17 promotion from Louisville, Higgins saw action in just eight games for the Reds and slashed .250/.294/.313 with three RBI and one run across 20 plate appearances.

The Reds selected Higgins' contract from Triple-A Louisville on Sunday. The 33-year-old was designated for assignment by Cincinnati last Wednesday, but he'll get another look in the majors with Jose Trevino (hamstring) landing on the injured list. Higgins went 2-for-10 with a walk and an RBI over six games during his previous stint in the majors this season. He'll serve as the backup catcher to Tyler Stephenson while Trevino is sidelined.

The Reds designated HIggins for assignment Wednesday. Cincinnati moved Higgins off its 40-man roster to free up a spot for right-hander Chris Paddack, who inked a one-year deal with the Reds on Wednesday. Higgins had been playing at Triple-A Louisville for the past two and a half weeks but was up with the Reds earlier in April, going 2-for-10 with a walk and an RBI over six games during his brief time in the majors.
