Taylor Rogers: Breaking News

Rogers (0-1) took the loss in relief Wednesday against the Mets after allowing one run on one hit and a walk over two-thirds of an inning. Rogers came to pitch in the eighth inning in a tied game, but he gave up what ended up being the deciding run on an RBI single by Mark Vientos that scored Brett Baty. Rogers has given up runs in three of his last seven appearances, posting a 4:4 K:BB and a 5.68 ERA across 6.1 frames over that stretch.

Rogers allowed one hit while striking out one over a scoreless inning in Thursday's 2-1 loss against Baltimore. Rogers was used in the eighth inning in a game the Twins were trailing 2-1. It was a high-leverage situation but Cole Sands was warming up in case the Twins tied the game or had a lead. Rogers may still figure into the closer mix, but manager Derek Shelton has said he's still figuring out his bullpen and roles will be determined by performance early in the season.

Rogers has a 4.50 ERA this spring with a 6:3 K:BB in four innings. He's still likely in the mix to close games but manager Derek Shelton said he still has no plans for how he'll distribute save opportunities, Matthew Leach of MLB.com reports. Rogers has the most experience closing games in the bullpen, but his declining velocity to an average fastball of 92.8 mph last season from a peak of 95.8 mph in 2021 may not make him ideal as the primary closer. He'll still had a decent 9.4 K/9 last season so he could be part of a committee. However, at this point it's very unclear how the Twins will divide up the opportunities to finish games among an unsettled bullpen that also includes save candidates Justin Topa, Cole Sands and Liam Hendriks.
