Tyler Tolbert: Breaking News

The Royals optioned Tolbert to Tripel-A Omaha on Sunday. Tolbert made Kansas City's Opening Day roster but totaled just five plate appearances in eight games during the first three-plus weeks of the season. He if he rejoins the big club later this season, the 28-year-old isn't likely to serve as much more than a pinch runner and defensive replacement.

Tolbert went 1-for-3 with two steals in Tuesday's 8-4 victory over the Angels. Tolbert started in center field Tuesday and showcased his speed with two stolen bases, giving him 20 on the season. Playing time has been sporadic, but he's held his own when given chances, slashing .292/.333/.396 across 55 plate appearances in 60 games. The 27-year-old has been productive in September, going 6-for-12 with a double, an RBI and three stolen bases.

Tolbert (cramps) will start in center field and bat ninth in Sunday's game against the Guardians. Tolbert dealt with cramping during his most recent start in Wednesday's 8-4 win over the Cubs, but he was available off the bench for both ends of Saturday's doubleheader with Cleveland, going 0-for-1 with a stolen base. He'll pick up his fourth start of the season in the series finale, replacing a resting Kyle Isbel in center field.
