A new update is starting to roll out for Pokemon Go. What’s new in the latest version of the game?

Once again, this is a pretty minor update that does not add any new features or Pokemon. The first thing it does is reduce the time it took Android phones to load up the game; before this update, some players on Android phones had complained that the game would take up to a minute or more just to boot up, and Niantic has now addressed that.

The next is another fix to an issue Android users had been experiencing: having trouble connecting their Android phone to the Pokemon Go Plus accessory. This appears to have been fixed with today’s update.

Finally, the patch notes state that the update includes iOS wheelchair support for use with Apple Watch. It seems that the game will now measure distance traveled in a wheelchair in the same way that the game measures steps to count towards egg hatching.

And that’s it. It’s unclear if this counts as our update for this week, or if this is more of a bonus update intended to fix a few minor issues. Not counting a small update released a few days ago to add Korean language support, the previous Pokemon Go update came on January 17th; updates usually release every two weeks, and they are typically announced on Monday or Tuesday, so Version 1.25.0/0.55.0 either doesn’t count as one of the “official” updates, or it was just released a bit early.

However, there’s always a few things tweaked in these updates that aren’t mentioned in the patch notes. It was later discovered by users on The Silph Road that today’s update for Android finally makes it so the game does not pause the music you’re playing.

A datamine of the new update also lead to a few interesting discoveries, including the fact that the term “critical catch” now appears in the game’s code, and a new item type has started appearing in the code called “candy award.” It’s often the case that things that appear as code in updates like these are later unveiled as official parts of the game, so we’ll likely be hearing more about these additions in the nest few weeks.
