Andrés Muñoz: Breaking News

Munoz secured the save Monday against the Orioles, allowing no runs on no hits and one walk in the ninth inning. He struck out two. Baltimore made Munoz work Monday, as the hurler needed 20 pitches (11 strikes) to complete the frame. The hard-throwing right-hander is looking for some consistency as Seattle's closer, considering he's not yet converted four consecutive save opportunities at any point this year. Through 24.1 innings, Munoz has a shaky 5.18 ERA, 1.36 WHIP and 37:10 K:BB with 10 saves in 15 attempts.

Munoz (3-4) blew the save and took the loss against the Tigers on Sunday, allowing two runs on one hit and two walks in two-thirds of an inning. Munoz came in for the ninth inning to protect Seattle's 4-3 lead. He got the first batter he faced out but proceeded to walk the next two before yielding a two-run single to Kevin McGonigle. It was the fifth blown save of the season for Munoz, three of which have come over his last four save opportunities, and he now has a 5.40 ERA, 1.37 WHIP and 35:9 K:BB across 23.1 innings. The Mariners may have to look into turning closing duties over to Jose Ferrer or Matt Brash if Munoz continues to struggle.

Munoz allowed a run on two hits and struck out one without walking a batter over one inning, taking a blown save in Friday's 7-6 extra-inning win over the Diamondbacks. Munoz wasn't able to protect a one-run lead in the ninth inning, but he didn't let Arizona get ahead. The Mariners then walked it off in the 10th. Munoz has allowed a run in each of his last two outings and has converted just one of his last three save chances as his early struggles have continued in the middle part of the campaign. He's at a 4.98 ERA, 1.34 WHIP and 34:7 K:BB through 21.2 innings while converting just nine of 13 save chances. While Munoz has struggled, manager Dan Wilson has largely stuck by his closer -- Jose Ferrer (three) is the only other reliever with multiple saves on the team.
