Zachery Kelly: Breaking News

Kelly retired both batters faced in the seventh inning to earn a hold in Tuesday's 3-2 win over Milwaukee. Kelly entered a high-leverage situation that might normally be entrusted to Justin Slaten, but he was unavailable due to an oblique injury. With Boston leading, 3-1, the bases loaded and one out, Kelly limited the damage to one run on a pair of groundouts and recorded his first hold. In three appearances since being called up from Triple-A Worcester last week, the right-handed reliever has allowed one run and one hit while striking out one over 2.2 innings. The 31-year-old Kelly is a well-known commodity in the bullpen, having made 98 appearances for the Red Sox over the previous four seasons.

The Red Sox recalled Kelly from Triple-A Worcester on Friday, Chris Cotillo of MassLive.com reports. Kelly was a late cut in spring training but gets an early opportunity with the big club. The right-hander put up a 4.58 ERA and 35:12 K:BB over 35.1 frames for the Red Sox last season. He'll operate in middle relief.

The Red Sox optioned Kelly to minor-league camp Monday. Kelly was gunning for a spot on Boston's Opening Day roster after appearing in 28 major-league games for the club in 2025, finishing with a 4.58 ERA, 1.33 WHIP, three holds and a 35:12 K:BB across 35.1 innings. The 31-year-old right-hander will likely start out in Triple-A Worcester but would be in line for a call-up to the majors when the Red Sox need more depth out of the bullpen.
