Edward Snowden, the ex-government contractor who leaked classified information from the National Security Agency (NSA) and fled to Russia, has joined Twitter as @snowden. He has already gained nearly 73k followers but is only following one other Twitter account: the NSA.

His first tweet was sent out at noon on September 29, 2015. It reads:

Snowden is the NSA whistleblower who fled Hawaii for Hong Kong in 2013 after revealing numerous global surveillance programs to journalists Glenn Greenwald, Laura Poitras, and Ewen MacAskill. The U.S. Department of Justice then charged Snowden with violating the Espionage Act and theft of government property. On the run since, he eventually sought temporary asylum in Russia, where he currently resides while he seeks permanent asylum elsewhere.
