James Harris Jackson is seen in a surveillance photo released by the NYPD.

A Maryland white supremacist is accused of fatally stabbing a 66-year-old man with a sword in a racially motivated attack in Midtown Manhattan, the NYPD says.

James Harris Jackson, 28, traveled from Baltimore to New York City to target black men, the New York Daily News reports. Jackson turned himself in on Wednesday after the Tuesday night stabbing on West 39th Street near 9th Avenue, the Daily News reports.

Authorities say he planned more killings and told police the attack was “practice” for a Times Square bloodbath, DNAInfo reports.

Assistant Police Chief William Aubry told reporters, “We’re very fortunate that it stopped at one, and it wasn’t more.”

The victim, Timothy Caughman, who is black, was attacked by Jackson about 11:30 p.m., police said.

Jackson has been charged with second-degree murder, and additional hate crime-related charges could also be added and the murder charge could be upgraded to first-degree.

“The defendant was motivated purely by hatred,” Assistant District Attorney Joan Illuzzi told NBC New York. “As this was an act most likely of terrorism.”

Police Commissioner James O’Neill said at a press conference Wednesday that the attack was “clearly racially motivated,” calling it “extremely distressing.”

1. Jackson Was Seen on Video Running From the Scene While Holding the Knife After Stabbing Caughman Multiple Times in the Chest, Police Say

James Harris Jackson was caught on surveillance video running away from the scene Tuesday night. The NYPD released the video, which you can watch above, in hopes of identifying him.

According to the New York Daily News, police said Jackson stabbed Timothy Caughman in the chest multiple times. The victim could be heard saying, “What are you doing?” during the attack, the Daily News reports.

Jackson surrendered to police at the NYPD’s substation in Times Square about 1 a.m., sources told the Daily News.

“You need to arrest me. I have the knife in my coat,” Jackson told officers.

Police found the knife used in the attack, the New York Post reports.

He was carrying the wanted flier with his photo on it and told the officers, “I’m the person you’re looking for,” PIX 11 reports.

The news station described the weapon as a “26-inch black sword,” which you can see above.

Police said the surveillance video “proves that the victim was attacked because he was black.”

Jackson is a member of a documented hate group in Maryland, the New York Daily News reports.

He told detectives came to New York City from Baltimore “to harm black males,” specifically those who date white women, according to police.

According to the New York Post, Jackson told officers he turned himself in before he attacked an interracial couple in Times Square early Wednesday morning.

A former neighbor told the Associated Press that Jackson was studying to be lawyer, but skipped out on a Maryland apartment after falling several months behind on rent.

Marcus Dagan, who said he informally manages the Baltimore building where he and Jackson lived in 2014 and 2015, told the AP that Jackson is “one of those people that you wish you never met.”

According to PIX 11, Jackson came to New York City on Friday, taking a Bolt Bus from Baltimore. Jackson chose Manhattan because “it’s the media capital of the world and he wanted to make a statement,” police told the reporters, DNAInfo reports.

“He knew what he was doing when he was coming up here,” NYPD’s Chief of Detectives for Manhattan William Aubry said at a press conference. “It is believed he was specifically intending to target male blacks. It’s been well over 10 years that he has been harboring his hate towards blacks.”

Jackson had been staying in a Midtown hotel since arriving in the city on Friday. Police said they are speaking to Jackson’s family and associates in Maryland and are looking into possible social media profiles as they continue to investigate.

  1. Any comments from our empty-headed conservative friends? Or does this story not align with your dumbass views and uneducated opinions?

    • I am what you consider a conservative, but I am not a racist, a hater, empty-headed or any other container you want to put me in. Contrary to your opinions, conservatives do not condone or spread hatred, but I have a feeling you really dont care about that. I will ignore the fact that you are just trying to bait someone into getting into some heated argument, all in the effort to shoe how bad conservatives are and ask for the sake of everyone getting along to just delete the post….

      • you may not be racist, but I think what most people are disgusted with is that conservatives in general are not speaking out about Trump and Co’s OBVIOUS lack of disavowing or even acknowledging the rampant racism that has increased exponentially since he started campaigning, and especially since he won. That is the most abhorrent thing to me and many people that I know.

      • hmm conservatives dont condone hatred is that why transgenders are told they cants use their bathrooms or gay people shouldnt be married or women shouldnt be able to control their own bodies but yeah conservatives dont condone hatred !!

        • I am the poster from above, the one that considers myself a conservative. I cannot speak for everyone, but I am not against or judge the LGBT community, I love them just as much as the next person. I have a lot of friends and relatives that are gay and or transgender. I am involved enough to know that there are plenty of transgenders that do not align their gender preference with their sexual preference, so to be honest I really dont know how I actually feel about the whole bathroom thing, and to be honest, I am a pretty private person when it comes to the bathroom, I would rather not have anyone in there while I am using it, so I personally dont have an agenda in one direction or the other. I do know its an issue that needs to be resolved and I hope its in a way that makes everyone happy (though that seems to be pretty difficult now days). But this is a good example of gasoline that fuels the fire. Just because someone has an opinion about issues like this, they really should not be put into a container and assume they hate and discriminate against minorities, that is just not fair, and kind of hurts. People have to really stop treating things like you are on a team and your team has to win. Break out on your own and stand up for what you really care about and stop worrying about everything else. If we keep supporting “teams” with an agenda that your team has to win, we will never get anywhere.

        • Why do those on the Left constantly confuse differences in beliefs and opinions as hatred? Because I may not agree with you doesn’t mean that I hate you. As someone that leans conservative, I don’t hate anyone because I disagree with them. Nor do I resort to name calling and labeling those I disagree with. That seems to be the reserved domain for the Liberal Left. My issues with the points you mentioned is exclusively Constitutional. If it’s not in the Constitution, the Federal government has no standing in it–such as with the points you made. Those are distinctly states’ rights issues and the SCOTUS has overreached on those cases. But it’s too late now. We’ve become complacent and allowed the courts to make our laws for us now. BTW, why do those supporting TG ‘rights’ conveniently forget that it’s not just ‘bathrooms’ that they want to use?

      • Yeah, but Spicer talks about those illegal alien teenagers raping a girl right on his briefing with a national audience.
Then you get idiots like this one in New York that sees as his job to kill ANYBODY that HE THINKS might be an illegal alien.
That’s where this Presidency and “conservatives” fall short. Common sense has gone on a long vacation.

      • Erm no he wasn’t. Check his Twitter feed, he was praising of the Women’s March against Trump and Barack Obama. Did you even read the guy’s feed before coming to spread propaganda?

  2. What a horrible event :(
President Trump said it best when he stated, “When you open your heart to patriotism, there is no room for prejudice.”
Here’s to hoping Mr. Jackson is prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

    • apparently that one line escaped many of his followers. The feel that under Trump, when you open your heart to patriotism, there is plenty of room for prejudice.

    • Sued by the DOJ TWICE for racist housing policies and after YEARS of racist Birtherism; LYING about not knowing who the hell David Duke is etc. there is NO giving Trump a pass because he posited a single sane sentence.

  3. We’re going to be seeing a lot more of this. Why? Because every ethnic-group deserves a home to preserve their culture, heritage and traditions. It’s projected that whites will be extinct within a century. Of course incidents like these are occurring….but still not as frequent as black on white crime. Anybody whose been to Chicago or Philadelphia knows that.

  4. Was he studying to be a lawyer or did he not graduate from college? Which is it lol

12 years in the army and a private? bad times

  5. Is there Freedom of the Press or not? Every reporter in the press is borrowing the same phrase, “a documented hate group in Maryland”, but none of them can substantiate the claim with facts. @BenDoody – if you share the facts about the name of the hate group, then everyone will cite Heavy instead of the New York Daily News.

    • Now that I’ve researched it a bit, I’ve come to a surprising conclusion. The Southern Poverty Law Center is not part of our government, but a private organization. What it does to label some groups as “hate groups” should be considered an act of defamation in the USA, where freedom of expression includes the freedom to be intolerant of others.

  6. Alt-right rejoices and dances, blames and shames the victim. Anonymous commenters throw unfounded and nasty comments about the victim. If they had any spine they would show their faces and names. So easy to hate when you can hide. Such brave white separatists, frightened to death that they will lose their un-earned White privelege and actually ahve to work at being liked instead of having minorities and women kowtow to them. They should all die in a fire…

    • It’s not Alt-Right. That’s such a mishmash of anti-establishment groups and ideologies, and only the extreme end of it harbors the 1488ers and other white supremacists, that you cannot make Alt-Right synonymous with hate.

This type of crime only makes sense if the perpetrator’s own life was in danger, and he felt that “life in prison” was safer for him than being on the streets. In this case, he would need “street credibility” to form his racist network behind bars.

    • FALSE. It was standard in Obama’s America.
Interracial murders increased from 2008 to 2016.

The number of whites killed by blacks is double the rate of black on white murders. More stats: FBI: Crime in the US 2010-2013 – Black on White murder was double the rate of White on Black murder. Department of Justice shows that despite making up 13% of the population, blacks committed 52% of the homicides from 1980 – 2008, and whites are twice as likely to be killed by police officers. In 2007, the FBI reported that black males commit 8 times as many crimes against whites, as the reverse, despite being outnumbered by whites 5 to 1.

A visual graph for years 2001-2015 is in the article by US NEWS & World Report titled, “Race and Homicide in America by the Numbers”.

The 2012-2013 DOJ report on race and violent crime states that:
Blacks targeted White victims for 38.6% of crimes,
Whites targeted Blacks victimes for 3.6% of crimes.

  7. I hate that James Harris Jackson became mentally ill, joined an extremist (terrorist) organization, and killed an American. Other than that, for what it’s worth… Thank You For Your Service Anyway… Lot’s of people try to be human. Lot’s of people fail to be human, It’s a fact of life.

  8. I personally knew Harris, as we used to call him. We went to a private Quaker school upon the foundation of the Quaker philosophy of peace, tolerance and non violence. Our whole class is not only shocked but totally distraught by his actions. I am considered conservative but I have never condoned violence. I hope Mr. Caughmans family can heal in the wake of this.

Back in High school Harris was never ride, crass or mean towards the other students like myself who were not white and if he ever harbored feelings of Hate, he hid it well back then.

    • What do you think radicalized him (or more appropriate, how did he self-radicalize)? His time in the armed forces, or Breitbart, or Drudge, or InfoWars, or Trump 2016?

      • None of those things you mention radicalize a person. InfoWars is just a loony conspiracy/entertainment show/column that somehow the left has decided is a serious news source that the right subscribes to, which is nonsense.

  9. Yea, let’s quickly upgrade this to 1st degree murder. What part of travelling from Baltimore to NYC for the sole purpose of killing is not pre-meditated? We would have loved to have seen you in CA, Timothy. RIP.

Jackson subscribed to include Cybernazi, Politically Incorrect and Esoteric Truths.

  11. I support white nationalism, as modern civilization was created by whites, is largely maintained by them, and is needed to advance the science/tech that will secure all humanity’s future. That said, this incident appears to be premeditated murder and should be fully prosecuted as such by NYC officials. There is no excuse for whites to act impulsively out of personal desire (rather than in self defense), especially when aligned with a nationalist cause that publicizes such violence as a major roadblock in integrating blacks and latinos into a white civilization.
