Christopher Bassitt: Breaking News

Bassitt (back) received a facet injection to his lower back Friday, and he's set to begin his throwing progression, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Bassitt was placed on the 15-day injured list June 8 due to low back discomfort, but he now appears to be set to begin to working towards a return to action. The right-hander will likely require at least one bullpen session and potentially a round of live batting practice before he'd begin a minor-league rehab assignment. Bassitt is first eligible to be activated from the IL on June 20, but he seems likely to remain sidelined into July at this point.

The Orioles placed Bassitt on the 15-day injured list Monday due to low back discomfort. Bassitt was lifted early from his last start Wednesday in Boston due to a tight back, but after briefly returning to Baltimore to get examined, he rejoined the Orioles over the weekend for their road series in Toronto. Though the righty appeared to be trending toward taking the hill for his next turn in the rotation Monday versus the Mariners, the Orioles instead have opted to place him on the IL to give him more time to move past the back issue. Trey Gibson was called up from Triple-A Norfolk and will draw the start Monday in place of Bassitt, who will be eligible to return from the IL beginning June 20. Per Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun, manager Craig Albernaz said Bassitt is still "looking at his options" for a treatment plan for the injury and is scheduled to receive a second opinion later this week.

Bassitt (back) is travelling to rejoin the Orioles in Toronto on Friday and could make his next start Monday against the Mariners, Jake Rill of MLB.com reports. Bassitt was pulled from his last start Thursday against the Red Sox due to lower-back tightness. He was initially held back in Baltimore to have his injury examined, but it looks like the veteran right-hander will not miss a start in the rotation, barring any setbacks. Over his last five starts, Bassitt has a 4.44 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and 17:5 K:BB across 24.1 innings.
