Grant Wolfram: Breaking News

The Orioles reinstated Wolfram (back) from the 15-day injured list and appointed him as their 27th man for Sunday's doubleheader versus the Tigers. Wolfram will rejoin Baltimore after spending the minimum amount of time on the shelf while recovering from a back strain. The Orioles will have to option a player to the minors following the twin bill, and despite being designated as the 27th man, Wolfram could have decent odds of sticking around with the big club beyond Sunday. Though he maintains a 4.85 ERA and 1.54 WHIP through 13 innings with the Orioles on the season, Wolfram's 30.6 K-BB% and 1.72 SIERA indicate that he's been one of Baltimore's more dominant bullpen arms.

The Orioles placed Wolfram on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a lower-back strain, retroactive to Saturday. Wolfram hasn't pitched since he gave up one run in two-thirds of an inning against the Marlins last Wednesday, and it appears his absence has been due to a back injury. His move to the injured list will rule him out until at least May 24, and the O's will recall Tyler Wells from Triple-A Norfolk to fill the vacancy in their bullpen.

Wolfram picked up a hold Wednesday against the Marlins, allowing one run on two hits and no walks in two-thirds of an inning. The 29-year-old left-hander has now given up five earned runs in his last nine appearances, so he appears to be well out of contention for save chances in closer Ryan Helsley's (elbow) absence. Although Wolfram has a superb 20:1 K:BB with five holds over 13.0 innings, he also has a rocky 4.85 ERA and 1.54 WHIP.
