Grant Wolfram: Breaking News

The Orioles placed Wolfram on the 15-day injured list Tuesday with a lower-back strain, retroactive to Saturday. Wolfram hasn't pitched since he gave up one run in two-thirds of an inning against the Marlins last Wednesday, and it appears his absence has been due to a back injury. His move to the injured list will rule him out until at least May 24, and the O's will recall Tyler Wells from Triple-A Norfolk to fill the vacancy in their bullpen.

Wolfram picked up a hold Wednesday against the Marlins, allowing one run on two hits and no walks in two-thirds of an inning. The 29-year-old left-hander has now given up five earned runs in his last nine appearances, so he appears to be well out of contention for save chances in closer Ryan Helsley's (elbow) absence. Although Wolfram has a superb 20:1 K:BB with five holds over 13.0 innings, he also has a rocky 4.85 ERA and 1.54 WHIP.

Wolfram picked up a hold Wednesday against the White Sox, fanning one and allowing one hit with no walks in a scoreless seventh inning. Wolfram is now up to three holds so far this year, and he's emerging as a key piece out the Baltimore bullpen in the early going. Through his first five frames, the left-hander owns a 3.60 ERA, 1.20 WHIP and 9:2 K:BB and should continue to either in middle-relief or high-leverage spots as needed.
