Yoendrys Gómez: Breaking News

Gomez earned the save in Sunday's 5-4 win over the Guardians by recording all three outs in a scoreless ninth. Eric Orze was deployed in the Twins' 2-1 extra-innings win Saturday, so Gomez was tasked with protecting the Twins' one-run lead in the ninth. He answered the call by tossing nine strikes on 10 pitches for his second save of the season and third of his major-league career. The Twins are still figuring out who their go-to closer will be, and seven players have logged at least one save this season. Justin Topa leads the way with two saves, though he's given up nine earned runs over his last 2.1 innings.

The Twins acquired Gomez from the Rays on Wednesday in exchange for cash considerations. Gomez is out of minor-league options, so he'll be added to the Minnesota bullpen. The 26-year-old holds a 6.23 ERA, 1.67 WHIP and 13:10 K:BB through 17.1 innings at the big-league level in 2026.

The Rays designated Gomez for assignment Saturday, Ryan Bass of Rays.tv reports. Gomez has gotten off to a poor start this season, logging a 6.23 ERA and 1.67 WHIP with a 13:10 K:BB through 17.1 innings, and he'll now end up as the odd man out of a roster spot following Garrett Cleavinger's (calf) return from the injured list. Gomez, 26, owns a 5.11 ERA and 1.45 WHIP in his MLB career and could end up spending the rest of the season as organizational depth if he clears waivers.
