Malachi Smith: Breaking News

Smith ended with eight points (3-9 FG, 2-6 3Pt), five rebounds and six assists in 36 minutes during Sunday's 136-101 loss to the Raptors. Smith, who earned a two-year contract with the Nets after impressing on a couple of 10-day deals, was used quite heavily down the stretch due to injuries. He ended up with 15 regular-season appearances under his belt to go with averages of 8.3 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.3 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.3 three-pointers on 48.5 percent shooting from the field. He'll have some decent momentum heading into training camp in September.

Smith finished Friday's 125-108 loss to Milwaukee with 19 points (7-11 FG, 5-7 3Pt), eight rebounds and 10 assists over 43 minutes. The Nets are digging deep for healthy bodies at this point, and Smith has logged at least 37 minutes in three consecutive games. Smith registered his first career double-double Friday, and Brooklyn may need him to take on one more massive workload in Sunday's regular-season finale against the Raptors.

Smith will start Tuesday versus Milwaukee, C.J. Holmes of the New York Daily News reports. Smith will replace Jalen Wilson in the first unit for Tuesday's game, and this will be Smith's first start of the season. Per 36 minutes, Smith is averaging 13.3 points, 4.4 rebounds, 4.1 assists, 2.1 triples and 2.0 steals per contest.
