Baby Dies in Freak Baggage Claim Conveyor Belt Accident

baby dies in baggage claim accident

An American woman and her two children were arriving in Spain for a family vacation when a freak accident killed her 5 month old child.

According to Sky News, the mother arrived at Alicante-Elche airport in the south of Spain at 11 p.m. Wednesday night when she placed her infant son on a “heavy baggage collection belt.”

Police believe the conveyor belt was activated by the child’s weight. An unsuccessful attempt was made to resuscitate the baby.

According to Sky News, a Guaria spokesperson said:

We are still in the early stages of the investigation and looking at CCTV footage, but it seems that it was an accident. The mother left the baby on the conveyor belt, which can be activated by detecting weight or by an airport employee. It seems that the baby carrier’s weight activated the belt and the child was trapped in the rollers in the drop zone.

A post-mortem evaluation is expected to be preformed Thursday or Friday.
