Italy opens Euro 2020 play at home in Rome as the squad takes on Turkey at Stadio Olimpico on Friday.
In the United States, the match (3 p.m. ET start time) will be televised on ESPN (English broadcast), TUDN (Spanish) and Univision (Spanish). Turkey vs Italy Preview
The long-awaited Euro 2020 tournament kicks off as Turkey and Italy face off on Friday in Rome. Italy is the favored side and come in ranked as a top 10 side, per the FIFA World Rankings. Turkey is ranked 29th, but they have the attention and respect of Italy, which is making sure not to underestimate them.
“We must respect Turkey, they are a side full of talent,” Italy coach Roberto Mancini said. “The opener is always difficult, and there will be plenty of emotions but you can’t get too carried away. I don’t think there is an excess of enthusiasm: The fans can have that; we know who we are up against. The desire to be protagonists at this EURO is huge but this is a match to be played with lightheartedness. We can do it!”
Italy has finished as quarter-finalist or better in each of their last three Euro trips. The Italians have never lost to Turkey, notching seven wins and three draws in their previous matches.
A win in the opener would go a long way for Turkey, especially against Italy, the favorite to win the group.
“The result we get in the first match is important; a draw or a win can cause confusion in the group. I hope so. I want to see our strength in the first match; even if we lose, it’s important to play well. I hope it’s going to be a great game, an enjoyable game … and that we win!”
The rest of Group A is made up of Switzerland and Wales. Italy has odds of -186 to finish at the top, while Turkey is +540 to win it and +130 to finish in the top two.
