Ottavino cleared waivers Thursday and elected free agency. This marks the second time in the past week that Ottavino has opted for free agency after being DFA'd by the Yankees. His previous stint on the open market lasted less than a day before New York brought him back in, though it's unclear if the two sides will reunite this time around.
The Yankees designated Ottavino for assignment Tuesday, Greg Joyce of the New York Post reports. For the second time in five days, Ottavino has been removed from the Yankees' 40-man roster. He quickly re-signed the first time around, but it's not clear whether the Yankees plan to bring him back again.
Ottavino re-signed with the Yankees on Sunday night, Andy Martino of SNY.tv reports. Ottavino elected free agency Sunday after being designated for assignment by the Yankees on Friday, but he will now join the team's major-league bullpen ahead of its three-game series in Detroit beginning Monday. The right-hander has made two scoreless appearances with the Yankees so far this season, allowing two walks while striking out two batters over 1.1 innings.
