Receives outright assignment

Salazar cleared waivers and was outrighted to Triple-A Sugar Land on Friday, Chandler Rome of The Athletic reports. Salazar was designated for assignment Wednesday, but the 30-year-old catcher will remain within the Astros' organization. He could be called upon if Yainer Diaz or Christian Vazquez sustain an injury.

The Astros designated Salazar for assignment Wednesday. The Astros chose to roster Christian Vazquez over Salazar as their backup catcher. Teams are often on the lookout for catching depth, so it's possible Salazar draws interest on waivers.

Fails to make Opening Day roster

Salazar did not make the Astros' Opening Day roster, Matt Kawahara of the Houston Chronicle reports. He's out of minor-league options, so Salazar will have to be exposed to waivers first if the Astros intend to send him to Triple-A Sugar Land. The 30-year-old has seen spot duty with Houston the past three years, slashing .232/.318/.268in 67 plate appearances.
