Isaac Mattson: Breaking News

The Pirates recalled Mattson from Triple-A Indianapolis on Saturday, Danny Demilio of PittsburghBaseballNow.com reports. Mattson will rejoin the Pirates' bullpen after posting a 1.86 ERA and 1.45 WHIP with 11 strikeouts in 9.2 innings since being optioned to Triple-A on May 20. Antwone Kelly was optioned to Indianapolis in a corresponding move.

Pittsburgh optioned Mattson to Triple-A Indianapolis on Wednesday. The 30-year-old will be sent back to Triple-A after posting a 4.12 ERA and 15 strikeouts in 19.2 innings for Pittsburgh on the season. The Pirates will replace Mattson in the bullpen with right-hander Wilber Dotel, who was recalled from Indianapolis.

Mattson allowed two hits while striking out two in one inning on Monday in a 5-0 loss to the Padres. Mattson was a revelation out of the bullpen for the Pirates last season posting a 2.45 ERA in 44 appearances after only making seven appearances before being called up in May. The right-hander has had a heavy workload so far pitching in six out of Pittsburgh's 10 games posting a 3.00 ERA and seven strikeouts. The Pirates bullpen does not have many proven right-handers other than Dennis Santana, which means Mattson could continue appearing in many games this season.
