Akin (groin) will begin a rehab assignment Wednesday, Matt Weyrich of The Baltimore Sun reports. Akin has been shelved all season with a left groin strain but has been cleared to try things out in game action. The lefty suffered the injury late in spring training and doesn't need to rebuild much stamina as a reliever, so Akin could require only a couple rehab appearances if he looks and feels good.
The Orioles placed Akin on the 10-day injured list Wednesday due to a left groin strain. Akin was diagnosed with the groin strain following an MRI earlier this week, after he had initially experienced the injury while warming up for a Grapefruit League game last Saturday. The Orioles haven't provided a timeline for Akin's return, but he won't be eligible to make his 2026 debut until April 6 after landing on the shelf.
Orioles manager Craig Albernaz said Sunday that Akin (adductor) is scheduled to undergo an MRI on Monday, Roch Kubatko of MASNSports.com reports. The MRI should provide more information on the extent of the adductor injury that Akin suffered while warming up in the bullpen Saturday and will help the Orioles determine whether or not the lefty requires a stint on the injured list to begin the season. If Akin ends up being shelved, it could open the door for Grant Wolfram to make the Opening Day roster as another southpaw option out of the bullpen.
