Matthew Gage: Breaking News

Scoreless outing Friday

Gage allowed one walk in a scoreless inning during Friday's 3-0 loss to the Yankees. Gage entered in the ninth inning and threw eight of his 14 pitches for strikes. According to Shayna Rubin of the San Francisco Chronicle, the left-hander is a candidate to pitch high-leverage innings this season along with Ryan Walker, Erik Miller and Jose Butto, all of whom made appearances Friday. Gage appeared in 27 regular-season games for San Francisco last season, recording a 3.91 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 24:10 K:BB across 25.1 innings.

Earns hold in exhibition

Gage picked up a hold in Monday's 10-2 exhibition victory over Sultanes de Monterrey, throwing one scoreless inning. Gage forced two groundouts and a flyout in San Francisco's penultimate spring game, throwing nine of his 13 pitches for strikes. The left-hander is in contention for a spot on the Opening Day roster ahead of Wednesday's game against the Yankees. Over seven Cactus League outings, he allowed two earned runs on three hits, including one home run, while striking out nine in 6.1 innings.

Picks up loss Monday

Gage (0-1) took the loss in Monday's 8-1 defeat to the Diamondbacks, allowing one earned run on one hit and one walk across one relief inning. Gage entered the game in the fifth inning and retired three of the four batters he faced, walking one. However, he gave up a double to begin the sixth and was subsequently removed. The right-hander has allowed five runs in his last three appearances, giving up six hits and two walks while hitting one batter in 2.2 innings during that span. He has recorded a 3.97 ERA, 1.50 WHIP and 21:9 K:BB across 22.2 innings in 23 appearances with San Francisco this season.
