Scott Kingery: Breaking News

Kingery was sent outright to Triple-A Iowa on Monday, per MLB's transactions log. Kingery was designated for assignment by the Cubs on Friday, after he'll report to Iowa after going unclaimed on waivers. The 31-year-old hit .228 with seven home runs, 28 RBI, two stolen bases and 29 runs scored over 59 games a season ago at Triple-A Salt Lake.

The Cubs designated Kingery for assignment Friday. Kingery won a spot on the Cubs' bench out of spring training but has since appeared in just eight games while going 1-for-4 at the plate and tallying two runs and a steal. He'll be pushed off the active roster in favor of Nicky Lopez, whose contract was selected from Triple-A in a corresponding move.

The Cubs selected Kingery's contract from Triple-A Iowa on Wednesday. Kingery was able to emerge from spring training with a utility job after slashing a middling .204/.339/.327 over 59 plate appearances but making an impact on the basepaths (five steals in five attempts). The 31-year-old is unlikely to see extensive playing time, but he could prove to be a useful bench asset thanks to his speed and ability to play three infield spots and all three outfield positions.
