The Yankees signed Sanchez to a minor-league contract Dec. 17. A defensive-minded catcher, Sanchez has slashed just .183/.220/.233 in 50 games at the big-league level across parts of four seasons. Sanchez will turn 29 in January and is likely to start the 2026 campaign at Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Red Sox outrighted Sanchez to Triple-A Worcester on Tuesday. Worcester's season is over, but Sanchez remains in the organization in case the Red Sox have a catching depth emergency later this week. He's gone 5-for-23 at the plate this season during stints with the Blue Jays and Red Sox.
Sanchez was designated for assignment Sunday, Jen McCaffrey of The Athletic reports. The Red Sox needed a spot on the active roster for Wilyer Abreu, who was activated from the injured list. The 28-year-old Sanchez is still searching for his first big-league home run, as he has a .183/.220/.233 career slash line in 133 MLB plate appearances dating back to 2020.
