Arias (hamstring) started at shortstop and went 0-for-1 with a walk for Triple-A Columbus on Thursday. Arias opened a rehab assignment with the Clippers and played five innings in the field before taking a seat for the final four frames. He's been out since early April, which suggests he'll use up most of the allotted 20 days for players on a rehab assignment. Given the performances of Brayan Rocchio at shortstop and Travis Bazzana at second base, Arias may have to settle for a utility backup role once he's ready.

Gabriel Arias: Breaking News
Beginning assignment Thursday
Arias (hamstring) will begin a rehab assignment at Triple-A Columbus on Thursday, Tim Stebbins of MLB.com reports. Arias has been on the shelf since early April due to a strained left hamstring, but a week after resuming baseball activities, he's now ready to test his hamstring in a competitive setting. He's likely to require an extended rehab assignment because he's been out for so long, but he should be able to return from the IL by the end of June.
Closing in on rehab assignment
Guardians manager Stephen Vogt said Saturday that Arias (hamstring) is getting "closer" to a rehab assignment, MLB.com reports. Arias recently began baseball activities and hitting in cages following a brief pause in his rehab activity. Since he landed on the injured list in early April, Cleveland's middle infield has evolved into a tandem of Travis Bazzana at second base and Brayan Rocchio at shortstop. That leaves an infield utility role for Arias when he's ready to return; however, Daniel Schneemann can fill that same role.
