Luis Torrens: Breaking News

Torrens has claimed a spot on the Mets' Opening Day roster, Anthony DiComo of MLB.com reports. The 29-year-old gives New York a reliable option behind Francisco Alvarez, who has had some trouble staying healthy so far in his MLB career. Torrens slashed .226/.284/.345 in 283 plate appearances last season with five homers and 29 RBI.

The Mets and Torrens avoided arbitration by agreeing to a one-year, $2.275 million contract Thursday, Will Sammon of The Athletic reports. Torrens had been eligible for salary arbitration for a final time. He put up a .629 OPS for the Mets in 2025 and is again slated to serve as the backup catcher behind Francisco Alvarez (thumb) in 2026.

The Mets activated Torrens (forearm) from the 10-day injured list Wednesday. Torrens needed only a minimum stay on the IL with a right forearm contusion. Francisco Alvarez (triceps) is back in the lineup Wednesday against the Padres after exiting Tuesday's 8-3 win, so Torrens will serve as the team's backup catcher.
