Newsome had been dealing with a shin injury, but it seems as if the third-year corner has moved past that issue. Without Denzel Ward (shoulder) in Week 13, Newsome projects to be Cleveland's top cornerback against a Rams offense that's averaging just under 242 passing yards per game.
He added one pass breakup. The seven tackles were a new season-best for the 2021 first-rounder. Newsome has battled elbow, hamstring and groin injuries this season but has appeared in nine of 11 contests, recording 32 tackles (21 solo), five pass breakups, one interception that he returned for a touchdown and 0.5 sacks.
Newsome was able to return to practice Thursday after missing Wednesday's session, but he couldn't avoid an injury designation going into the weekend. If he sits out in Week 10, Mike Ford will probably see an uptick in reps at cornerback.
The 2021 first-round pick recorded two consecutive DNPs during Wednesday and Thursdays practices, so it's not a surprise that he's been ruled out ahead of Sunday's contest. With Newsome missing time, Cameron Mitchell and Martin Emerson will both likely have an increased workload in Cleveland's secondary.
Newsome left for the locker room at the end of the first half. Now that he's out for the rest of the game, Martin Emerson should slot in for Newsome opposite of Denzel Ward.
Newsome had one tackle and a pass deflection before heading to the locker room toward the end of the first half. Martin Emerson is the most likely candidate for increased snaps at cornerback opposite starter Denzel Ward as long as Newsome is out of the game.
