Brent Suter: Breaking News

Suter will serve as the Angels' opening pitcher in Monday's contest in Cleveland, Jeff Fletcher of The Orange County Register reports. Suter will draw his second opener assignment of the season, after he allowed one run over two frames in his first start back on April 16 against the Yankees. Alek Manoah is slated to be the team's primary pitcher Monday sometime after Suter exits the game.

Suter did not factor into the decision Thursday against the Yankees, allowing one run on three hits and two walks while striking out two over two innings. Making his first start of the season, Suter was punished early, when he served up an 88 mph fastball that Aaron Judge launched into the seats in the first inning. The southpaw followed up with a 30 pitch second inning that resulted in stranding two runners in scoring position to limit further damage. Despite the hiccup Thursday, Suter has been a great bullpen arm for the Angels, maintaining a 2.40 ERA, 1.27 WHIP and a 15:6 K:BB across 15 innings.

Suter will be the Angels' starting pitcher for Thursday's game against the Yankees. Suter has been deployed mainly as a long reliever the last several seasons, but he covered 3.2 innings in his most recent appearance and will be on four days' rest Thursday, so he could cover 4-to-5 frames against the Yankees if things go well. The lefty has pitching exceptionally for the Angels this season, collecting a 2.08 ERA and 13:4 K:BB over 13 innings.
