Chase Shugart: Breaking News

The Phillies recalled Shugart from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. The right-hander missed out on the Opening Day roster but will round out Philadelphia's bullpen following the demotion of Seth Johnson. Shugart had a 3.40 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 31:17 K:BB across 45 innings out of the bullpen for the Pirates last season.

The Phillies optioned Shugart to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday. Shugart was acquired from the Pirates in January but has missed out on the Opening Day roster after posting a 3.72 ERA and 7:7 K:BB over 9.2 Grapefruit League innings. The right-hander had a 3.40 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 35 appearances with Pittsburgh last year and should be up with Philadelphia at some point this season when bullpen depth is needed.

The Phillies acquired Shugart from the Pirates on Tuesday in exchange for Francisco Loreto, Charlotte Varnes of The Athletic reports. Shugart had been designated for assignment last week and is now headed across the state. The right-hander appeared in 35 games for the Pirates in 2025, finishing with a 3.40 ERA and 31:17 K:BB over 45 innings. Shugart will compete for a spot in the Phillies' bullpen, but he has minor-league options remaining.
