Chase Shugart: Breaking News

Shugart allowed one hit and no walks in two scoreless innings of relief Friday against the Pirates. He struck out one. Since being recalled from Triple-A Lehigh Valley in the middle of April, Shugart has given the Phillies quality work out of the bullpen while operating mostly in middle relief. Through 15.2 innings for Philadelphia, the right-hander boasts a 1.72 ERA, 0.96 WHIP and 15:3 K:BB.

The Phillies recalled Shugart from Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Tuesday. The right-hander missed out on the Opening Day roster but will round out Philadelphia's bullpen following the demotion of Seth Johnson. Shugart had a 3.40 ERA, 1.11 WHIP and 31:17 K:BB across 45 innings out of the bullpen for the Pirates last season.

The Phillies optioned Shugart to Triple-A Lehigh Valley on Sunday. Shugart was acquired from the Pirates in January but has missed out on the Opening Day roster after posting a 3.72 ERA and 7:7 K:BB over 9.2 Grapefruit League innings. The right-hander had a 3.40 ERA and 1.11 WHIP across 35 appearances with Pittsburgh last year and should be up with Philadelphia at some point this season when bullpen depth is needed.
