Garrett Stubbs: Breaking News

Stubbs cleared waivers Saturday and was outrighted to Triple-A Lehigh Valley, Lochlahn March of The Philadelphia Inquirer reports. Stubbs was DFA'd after losing the race for the backup catcher job in Philadelphia to Rafael Marchan but will remain in the organization. The 32-year-old Stubbs slashed .265/.352/.402 across 307 plate appearances in Triple-A last season and would likely return to the majors if J.T. Realmuto or Marchan had to miss any amount of time.

The Phillies designated Stubbs for assignment Wednesday. Stubbs lost out to Rafael Marchan for the Phillies' backup catcher job and is now without a spot on the 40-man roster. The 32-year-old has slashed only .215/.293/.310 in parts of seven big-league seasons, but catching depth is always a commodity so he could be scooped up on waivers.

Manager Dave Dombrowski said that Stubbs will be designated for assignment if the Phillies are unable to find a trade for the 32-year-old catcher prior to Wednesday, Ty Daubert of PhilliesNation.com reports. The Phillies will head into Opening Day with J.T. Realmuto and Rafael Marchan as their two catchers, and since Stubbs has no minor-league options remaining, he'll have to be exposed to waivers if Philadelphia is unable to trade him elsewhere. In an effort to strengthen his case for a roster spot, Stubbs received some exposure to third base and left field during the Grapefruit League, but it wasn't enough for the Phillies to keep him over Marchan as the No. 2 backstop.
