Trey Sweeney: Everything you need to know

Sweeney will undergo season-ending shoulder surgery this week, Cody Stavenhagen of The Athletic reports. Sweeney was sidelined with a shoulder strain during spring training and has experienced minimal improvement over the last four months despite receiving injections. He'll now undergo arthroscopic surgery and miss the entirety of the 2026 campaign. Sweeney has a career .202/.261/.313 slash line with 10 home runs, 49 RBI, 47 runs scored, five stolen bases and a 33:124 BB:K across 445 plate appearances over the previous two seasons.

Sweeney (shoulder) is dealing with a rotator cuff issue and has been shut down from baseball activities to be evaluated, Chris McCosky of The Detroit News reports. Sweeney has been on the shelf all season due to a shoulder strain he sustained at the start of spring training, and the rotator cuff issue will extend his absence. It's not clear how much longer the 25-year-old will be sidelined, but he seems unlikely to be rejoining the Tigers anytime soon.

The Tigers transferred Sweeney (shoulder) to the 60-day injured list Saturday. The move corresponds with the Tigers claiming Grant Holman off waivers from the Dodgers. Sweeney opened the regular season on the 10-day IL due to a right shoulder strain. He was given a PRP injection Thursday, but it appears that he is not progressing enough in his recovery as anticipated. Now that he's on the 60-day IL, the earliest Sweeney can make his 2026 regular-season debut is late May.
