The Cubs optioned Ferguson to Triple-A Iowa on Friday. He's being sent out in order to make space on the roster for the return of Edward Cabrera (finger), who will start Friday's game against the Giants. Ferguson was promoted earlier this week and did not make an appearance during this stint with the big club.
The Cubs recalled Ferguson from Triple-A Iowa on Tuesday. Acquired via trade from the Athletics last month, Ferguson was tagged for four runs over 1.1 innings in his lone major-league appearance this season and holds a 5.12 ERA and 13:11 K:BB across 19.1 frames at the Triple-A level. The 32-year-old will give the Cubs a fresh bullpen arm.
The Athletics traded Ferguson to the Cubs in exchange for cash considerations on Thursday. Ferguson was designated for assignment by the Athletics on Wednesday, but he will now fill the spot of Corbin Martin on the Cubs, who was also recently designated for assignment. Ferguson pitched 1.1 innings in one appearance for the Athletics in 2026, in which he allowed four earned runs on four hits, including two home runs.
