Frankie Luvu: Everything you need to know

Luvu recorded 86 tackles (42 solo), including 3.0 sacks, while adding six passes defensed and two forced fumbles in 2025. Luvu started all 17 regular-season games for a third consecutive season but recorded his lowest totals for tackles and sacks since the 2021 campaign. The 29-year-old linebacker appears to be on the downslope of his career, so the Commanders may consider cutting Luvu prior to the 2026 campaign for a $6.9 million cap penalty rather than absorbing the full $11.3 million cap hit from the final year of his three-year, $31 million deal.

Luvu recorded seven tackles (three solo) and one pass defense during the Commanders' 30-23 loss to the Cowboys on Thursday. Luvu joined Will Harris and Bobby Wagner as the three Commanders defenders to play all 92 snaps during their Christmas Day loss. The eighth-year pro is up to 85 combined tackles through 16 regular-season games, and he would need a big day against the Eagles in Week 18 in order to reach the tackling century mark for the third time in his NFL career.

Luvu (shoulder) was a full practice participant Thursday. Luvu has been dealing with a shoulder issue since mid-November but hasn't missed any games due to the injury. He was limited in practice Wednesday, but his ability to log a full session Thursday suggests the veteran linebacker will be ready to line up in his usual starting role against the Vikings on Sunday.
