Ertz caught three of four targets for 28 yards in a 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday, playing 70 percent of snaps on offense and running the second most routes (21) on the team. The aforementioned route totals don't count eight dropbacks on which rookie QB Jayden Daniels scrambled, which was one of the factors that made it difficult for any Washington pass catcher to have a decent receiving line. Four players, including Ertz, tied for the team lead with four targets, and running backs Austin Ekeler and Brian Robinson combined for 101 of the team's 184 receiving yards. Ertz's role hints that he could have some useful fantasy weeks ahead, although rookie second-round pick Ben Sinnott looms as a threat to eventually cut into the 33-year-old's snaps/routes. For now, however, Ertz figures to lead the Washington tight ends in playing time Week 2 against the Giants.
Brown wasn't targeted on 12 routes in a 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers on Sunday. Brown played 55 percent of snaps while rotating with Olamide Zaccheaus, who took 45 percent of snaps and caught one of three targets for 15 yards (on 13 routes). There's a good chance the two WRs continue to share playing time Week 2 against the Giants, but one or the other could potentially emerge as a full-time starter down the road.
Zaccheaus caught one of three targets for 15 yards in Sunday's 37-20 loss at Tampa Bay, playing 44.6 percent of snaps on offense. Zacccheaus and Dyami Brown shared snaps at one receiver spot while Terry McLaurin mostly played out wide on the left side of the offense and Luke McCaffrey worked the slot. Zaccheaus ended up running 13 routes, which was one more than Brown, who finished without a target. Fantasy value, even in deep leagues, likely will require one of the two to pull away from the other and become a true starter rather than a snap sharer. It remains to be seen if that will happen Week 2 against the Giants or Week 3 against the Bengals.
Seibert signed a contract with the Commanders on Tuesday, Zach Selby of the team's official site reports. Seibert will take over as Washington's new kicker beginning with Sunday's game versus the Giants in the wake of the Commanders cutting Cade York, who missed 47- and 56-yard field goal attempts in the team's Week 1 loss to the Buccaneers. Since entering the NFL in 2019, Seibert has bounced around between five organizations and has appeared in 31 career games while converting 45 of 56 field-goal attempts (80.4 percent) and 56 of 62 extra-point tries (90.3 percent).
Martin logged nine total tackles (eight solo) during Sunday's 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers. The second-year safety out of Illinois was one of the few bright spots for the Commanders' defense Sunday, finishing second on the team in total tackles. In Martin's rookie year, he appeared in 16 regular-season games and recorded 46 total tackles, including 1.0 sack and two interceptions. Expect Martin to have a more prominent role in the Commanders' secondary as his sophomore campaign progresses.
Ferrell recorded two total tackles (both solo), including 1.0 sack during Sunday's 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers. The first-year Commander was the only player to sack Baker Mayfield on Sunday, getting after Tampa Bay's quarterback in the third quarter. Ferrell spent his 2023 campaign with the 49ers, appearing in 17 regular-season games and recording 28 total tackles, including 3.5 sacks, and forcing one fumble. The 2019 first-round pick is expected to have a significant role in Washington's pass rush unit in 2024 as the team takes on the Giants in Week 2.
Wagner logged 10 total tackles (five solo), including three tackles for loss during Sunday's 37-20 loss to the Buccaneers. Wagner impressed in his first game with the Commanders despite Washington's poor defensive effort as a unit, logging double-digit tackles and leading the team in tackles for loss. The All-Pro linebacker spent his 2023 campaign with Seattle, logging 183 total tackles, including 3.5 sacks, across 17 regular-season games. Expect Washington's new tackling machine to continue making plays as the Commanders take on the Giants in Week 2.
