Mark Vientos: Breaking News

Vientos is out of the lineup for Wednesday's game against the Cardinals. Vientos will head to the bench for the fifth time in six games and appears to have lost his grip on a regular role while he's mustered a .128/.146/.213 slash line over his last 15 games. Jared Young has displaced Vientos as the Mets' preferred option at first base.

Vientos is not in the Mets' starting lineup against the Padres on Sunday. Vientos will be on the bench for the start of Sunday's game after going 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in Saturday's 3-2 loss to San Diego. Jared Young will start at first base while Juan Soto serves as the designated hitter.

Vientos will have to continue competing for at-bats with Jared Young and MJ Melendez, Laura Albanese of Newsday reports. The recent emergence of Young in particular has already started to cost Vientos playing time in the first few days of June. Vientos also hasn't helped his cause by mustering just a .125 average (4-for-32) over his last 10 games dating back to May 24. Manager Carlos Mendoza labels the situation a "healthy competition," and he did afford Vientos a start at designated hitter Saturday.
