Braydon Fisher: Breaking News

Fisher will open Saturday's game against the Orioles, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Fisher has been one of the Blue Jays' most effective high-leverage arms this season, posting a 2.62 ERA and 0.93 WHIP across 34.1 innings, but the team will move him up to the first inning Saturday for his fourth opening assignment of the season. He'll pitch an inning or so before handing the ball to Spencer Miles for bulk-relief work.

Fisher earned the save during the Blue Jays' 6-5 win over the Orioles on Friday, when he tossed a scoreless ninth inning without giving up a hit or walk. Louis Varland and Jeff Hoffman were both deployed from the Blue Jays' bullpen in each of the team's two games prior to Friday, so manager John Schneider turned to Fisher to protect Toronto's one-run lead. Fisher got the first two batters out before Gunnar Henderson reached base safely on an error by Ernie Clement, but Fisher secured the first save of his major-league career by getting Adley Rutschman to ground out. Fisher has not allowed a run over his last eight innings and sits at a 2.48 ERA, a 0.95 WHIP, six holds and a 33:12 K:BB across 32.2 frames this season.

Fisher will serve as the opener for Tuesday's game against the Marlins, Keegan Matheson of MLB.com reports. Fisher will step into the opener role for a third time this season. He'll work the first inning or so before handing the ball to a bulk reliever, presumably Spencer Miles.
