Luis Peralta: Everything you need to know

Peralta was claimed off waivers by the Cubs and optioned to Triple-A Iowa on Sunday, Taylor McGregor of Marquee Sports Network reports. Peralta was designated for assignment by the Cardinals on Friday, and he has now quickly found a new home with the Cubs. The southpaw never made an appearance in the Cardinals organization, but he posted an inflated 17.18 ERA and 3.24 WHIP with 14 strikeouts over 7.1 innings in six appearances, including one start, with Triple-A Albuquerque this season. Peralta clearly has the ability to punch out batters, but he'll need to greatly limit the damage against him in order to have any chance to join Chicago's major-league roster down the road this year.

The Cardinals designated Peralta for assignment Friday. Peralta was claimed earlier this week, but he's now headed back to waivers without having made an appearance in the Cardinals organization. The transaction clears a spot on the 40-man roster for the addition of Jared Shuster.

The Cardinals claimed Peralta off waivers from the Rockies on Monday. The younger brother of Freddy Peralta, Luis has spent all of this season at Triple-A Albuquerque, where he's been bludgeoned for 14 runs with a 14:13 K:BB over 7.1 frames. The left-hander has collected a 6.03 ERA and 30:23 K:BB in 31.1 innings during his chances at the big-league level. Peralta boasts a 30.2 percent strikeout rate in the minors but also a 13.9 percent walk rate. He will report to Triple-A Memphis.
