Max Fried: Everything you need to know

Yankees manager Aaron Boone said Friday that Fried (elbow) will throw off a mound Saturday, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Recent imaging on Fried's left elbow showed increased healing, and the southpaw is ready to take the next step in his recovery from a bone bruise that caused him to go on the 15-day injured list in mid-May. Per Bryan Hoch of MLB.com, Saturday's session will be "touch and feel" in what will be Fried's first time throwing off a mound since being placed on the IL. The Yankees should gain a better sense of Fried's injury recovery once the southpaw is cleared to embark on a rehab assignment, which could happen in late June.

Fried (elbow) is expected to begin throwing from 120 feet and will also undergo more imaging during the upcoming week, Gary Phillips of the New York Daily News reports. Fried has been out of action since landing on the 15-day IL in mid-May due to a left elbow bone bruise. He resumed playing catch May 25 but has yet to throw from a mound. The extension of his throwing distance thus represents a step forward for Fried, and his upcoming imaging could provide clearance for mound work if the results show adequate healing. Fried isn't likely to return to the Yankees' rotation until at least late June, however, and he may need to go on a minor-league rehab assignment before being activated.

Yankees manager Aaron Boone also revealed that Fried underwent follow-up imaging on his left elbow which showed "nothing really that would say he can start the ramp-up process yet," per Greg Joyce of the New York Post. Fried will be brought along slowly, however, with some light catch initially before upping the intensity of his throwing. The left-hander remains several weeks away from rejoining the big-league rotation.
